This List is open to all interested parties and is used by the NWS Upton NY to inform SKYWARN Spotters of general information regarding the SKYWARN Program. As a Subscriber to this List, you will also receive the Hazardous Weather Outlooks for the NWS Upton, NY CWFA. (issued around 4:00 AM local time each day and updated as necessary throughout the day). This important Bulletin provides timely information on the potential for local SKYWARN Activations and the type of Spotter Reports being requested.

IMPORTANT SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

The Upton Skywarn list server will be leaving yahoo groups. This changeover will be gradual over the next two weeks. I will post which
counties (or sub counties) will be moving to the new server.
Short History: When Joe Tomasone ran the server from his house we had three lists: Weather, Skywarn and Coordinators. When I became Regional
Skywarn Coordinator my first action was to utilize a full functioned, licensed EMWIN program. We now have 36
weather lists.
There are currently 36 lists.
4 special - skywarn, coordinators, tropical and weather (for all areas of the
NWS Upton NY (OKX CWA)
3 state weather lists - All NWS Upton NY CWA Counties NJ, NY, CT
29 zone weather lists - CT 8 lists - NJ 6 lists and NY 15 lists.
EMWIN started at NWS Upton but in recent years has been on a dedicated computer at my house.
Yahoo Groups started out great. It was full featured. But those features seemed to disappear. Chat is gone. E-Mail addresses now require a yahoo
ID which was not required when we started there.
Just this week I attempted to add a e-mail address for a computer where I work – a Suffolk county gov e-mail address and discovered that yahoo
id’s are required. That made up my mind. It was time to move. After a very short search Bob Schneider KC2CWT Putnam Coordinator offered to
help us and he has done an outstanding job. We should all thank him for his efforts.
As stated this will be phased in and “should” be seam-less to the users. All email addresses were transferred over.
As of today (Nov 30) three counties were switched over-These three lists had no users. If there are users which there will be from now on I will
also send to that list.

Weather bulletins will be sent from uptonskywarn@optonline.net and will change later. I will let
you know the new e-mail address
There are some downsides to this new list-server. No more web interface. I do not know how many utilized it but it is gone. If you logged in to
read emails you will have to look elsewhere.

For those actually following this move there is a slight change in the plan. Put Orange in in place of Nassau tomorrow and the reverse on Thursday. The reason is that the Nassau list actually added a member on 12/5 and moved down the list. That member will have to be notified and will have to manually subscribe. More on that tomorrow.

Nassau
Today we start only one group per day and the groups have more subscribers. (if you are playing along with the home version)
As I mentioned previous Nassau added a person on 12/5 which was after the new lists were created.
Message to deerhunter - You will have to subscribe to the Nassau list by visiting
http://www.okxskywarn.org as you were not automatically transferred.
The only question I get is what people should do to get on the new lists and the answer is generally nothing. (with the one exception so far above)
kc2cwt copied all of the users from the old yahoo lists and imported them. The only problem was there were users that had set their preferences to no email or special notices or daily digest. Those three choices are no longer available - so anyone with those settings were changed to receiving all messages. If this affects you or for any other reason you can unsubscribe at any time.
Lists page at www.okxskywarn.org has been updated and thanks to kc2cwt - my page at
http://skywarn.gigdot.net/lists
will be deleted.
While on subject (shameless plug) http://skywarn.gigdot.net
is still operational (for almost eleven years now) and is being updated. Any input appreciated especially weather related and skywarn material that you would like to see on the page.
