The Bergen County NJ SKYWARN Net On July 11, 2001
On July 11, 2001 at 6:38 AM the NWS Upton, NY issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning (Text below) for Bergen and Passaic Counties. At 7:00 AM a Bergen County SKYWARN Net was activated on the 10-70 Repeater and Check-ins were taken. Below is a picture taken by SKYWARN Spotter Mike Greenshields (KC2EOY) as the event unfolded in Ramsey, NJ and images from the NWS Mt. Holly, NJ NEXRAD Radar related to this event. As you can see, the event quickly developed and moved across the northern section of Bergen County. During that time, several reportable and timely weather and damage events were reported to Net Control from SKYWARN Spotters and these were then communicated directly to NWS meteorologists. The data collected during the SKYWARN Net was used by the NWS to update additional Severe Weather Warnings issued as the stormline moved to the East away from Bergen County.
