NNJ Severe Thunderstorms - April 19, 2002

On Friday April 19, 2002 SKYWARN was activated by the NWS for several states in the Northeast by a Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued by the Storm Prediction Center in Norman OK. During the time this Watch was in effect (from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm local time) several Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued by the NWS in Upton NY for different regions in the Northern New Jersey area.

Text of the Bergen County Warnings (SVROKX Bergen #1, SVROKX Bergen #2) is included below as is a NEXRAD Radar Image Chronology. Several Storm Damage photos from Bloomfield, Essex County NJ were supplied by a local SKYWARN Spotter..

A Bergen County NJ SKYWARN Net was activated on the W2PQG Repeater of the 10-70 Repeater Association at 4:32 pm local time and remained on the air until 6:46 pm local time. During the Net, 36 Amateur Radio Operators, located throughout the greater Northern New Jersey Area, checked in and reported on developing and occurring Severe Weather. As many of these operators were mobile at the time, some were able to report several times, from different locations. Severe Weather and Damage Reports received on the Net were from 28 different municipalities, which were located in 7 different NNJ and SNY Counties.

All Severe Weather and Damage Reports were immediately and directly communicated by Net Control to meteorologists working at the NWS in Upton NY and served to directly assist the forecasters as they issued additional Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for the Counties of Essex, Hudson, Union, Richmond, and local Coastal Water areas.

Many of the Reports taken on the Bergen County SKYWARN Net were included in the Preliminary Local Storm Report issued by the NWS Upton, NY. It should also be noted that many of these Local Storm Reports were actually being sent out over the NWS's EMWIN (Emergency Managers Weather Information Network) datastream even as the event was unfolding. Again highlighting the importance the NWS places on accurate and timely reporting of its SKYWARN Spotters
