When and How To Submit Storm or Storm Related Damage Reports

Tropical Storm and Hurricane Reporting Information

The first rule of severe weather spotting

 and emergency communications is to protect yourself!

Insure your own safety first!

Then and only then, communicate your observation.

Warm Season SKYWARN Activation:

SKYWARN, in the NWS Upton NY CWA, is automatically activated whenever any of the following items are Toned Alerted Over Local NOAA Weather Radio or whenever requested by the on-duty NWS Upton NY Lead Forecaster

• Flood Watches
• Flood Warnings (if not already activate by a Watch)
• Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Watches
• Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings (if not already activated by a Watch)
• Tropical Storm and Hurricane Warnings

Warm Season SKYWARN Activation and Reporting Criteria:

• Bergen and/or Passaic County SKYWARN Nets
  
  
  • Storm Reports for weather events meeting or exceeding the NWS Upton NY Warm Season SKYWARN Reporting Criteria as well as any associated Storm Damage Reports can be submitted on a Bergen-Passaic SKYWARN Net, by using the NWS Upton NY Online Spotter Report Webform, via Direct Email or by using the SKYWARN Spotter 1-800 number.
    
    
    • NWS Upton NY Tropical Storm and Hurricane Reporting Criteria:
      • Report any Life Threatening or Critical Level Items as noted in the NWS Upton NY Warm Season Reporting Criteria
      • Report any wind gusts 58 mph or greater
      • Any KNOWN storm surge inundations of coastal areas. Note: Never go to the shore to investigate it yourself, and EVACUATE immediately if told to do so by Emergency Management Personnel
      • The highest wind gust during the tropical storm/hurricane
      • The lowest barometric pressure and time it occurred
      • Event total rainfall
        
        
    • Tropical Storm, Hurricane or their associated Storm Damage Reports can be submitted on a Bergen-Passaic SKYWARN Net, by using the NWS Upton NY Online Spotter Report Webform, via Direct Email or by using the SKYWARN Spotter 1-800 number .  (Please Note: even if there is not a SKYWARN Net associated with a Tropical Weather event, any reports meeting the criteria noted above are requested)
